The Unsettling Expansion of Government DNA Collection A recent report from Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy and Technology reveals that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may have added as many as 920,000 genetic profiles to the FBI's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) in a single year.
This staggering number dwarfs the approximately 75,000 profiles sent by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), bringing the total new DNA profiles added in 2025 to over 1 million.
The vast majority of people detained by ICE have no criminal conviction – they are merely accused of being undocumented immigrants.
