A new study published in the journal Biology has shed light on the early lives of Tyrannosaurus rex, revealing that these miniature monsters were just as deadly as their grown-up counterparts. The findings, based on fossilized remains of two tyrannosaurid hatchlings, confirm what many paleontologists had long suspected: T. rex babies were not the cute, cuddly creatures often depicted in popular culture.
At a mere 5.5 pounds (2.5 kilograms), these baby T. rex were roughly the size of house cats, but their diminutive stature belied their impressive ferocity. According to Nicholas Longrich, lead author of the study, these tiny tyrants were likely hunting and killing on their own soon after hatching.
Longrich’s conclusion is based on a close examination of fossilized metatarsals from two baby T. rex and Gorgosaurus libratus, their close cousin. Advanced imaging techniques, such as synchrotron computed microtomography, revealed that these fossils had come from nearly newborn members of their respective species. The scans showed a dense network of blood vessels coursing through the bone, indicating rapid growth and development.
The study suggests that T. rex may have adopted an “r-selection” strategy, investing less in each individual offspring but producing more overall. This approach would allow them to rapidly colonize new habitats and adapt to changing environments. However, this theory raises questions about how their young managed to survive and thrive in a world filled with predators.
One possible explanation lies in the behavior of modern-day birds, such as ostriches and emus, which are known to be devoted parents but also give their young significant autonomy from an early age. Perhaps T. rex was simply following a similar model, allowing their offspring to learn crucial survival skills through trial and error.
The discovery of baby T. rex as miniature monsters challenges our assumptions about parenting, growth rates, and adaptability in these iconic carnivores. The fossil record may hold many secrets, but one thing is certain: when it comes to T. rex, size truly didn’t matter.
